The book is divided into three parts: Preliminaries (Part I), Spatial Multicriteria Decision Analysis (Part II), and Multicriteria-Spatial Decision Support Systems (Part III) (see Figure 1). Part I, an introduction to geographical information systems (GISs) and multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA), consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the three interrelated concepts of geographical data, information, and decision making. Chapter 2 provides an overview of the major functions of GIS and a discussion of their relevance for spatial decision making. In Chapter 3 the focus is shifted to multicriteria decision making. The chapter offers an introduction to MCDM and outlines a framework for spatial multicriteria analysis. The framework provides a base for organizing the material discussed in Part II.
